This IBA Medical Commission is to be made up of seven or eight medics globally, who will continue to review and update medical guidance in the sport.

"It was an honour to be asked to apply for the IBA Medical Commission and it is even more of an honour that they wanted me to take on the chair's position," said the doctor from Scotland.

"I am looking forward to it and it is exciting.

"It was verified at the recent IBA Congress, with the first meeting to be held next year.

"The demands will be helping direct changes in medical care and provide information to IBA to help make decisions.

"It helps me raise Scotland's profile a bit, and is good to be able to represent the country.

"It is great for Scottish boxing with our profile being high, with Craig McEvoy having so much success with the performance pathway and winning medals, the more Scotland’s profile gets raised it will only help.

"Being the chair of the Boxing Scotland Medical Commission, you have to follow IBA, you can't make unilateral decisions.

"Whereas now the group I will meet with will be able to actually make changes to improve safety and manage things for the best for boxing, obviously with IBA's direction."

While chair of his country's Medical Commission, Henderson has overseen one of the best periods in amateur boxing in Scotland, who won three gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games for the first time last year in Birmingham.

It followed on from Reese Lynch claiming bronze at the 2021 World Championships - Scotland's first podium on the world stage.
