Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Ifeanyi Onyekwere of Nigeria has set his sights on victory at this year's African Games.

Despite suffering defeat at his country's domestic National Sports Festival in Asaba, Onyekwere is determined to succeed at Accra 2023 in Ghana.

"I am disappointed to finish with a silver medal with all that I put in," the 22-year-old said, as reported by The Nation.

"I wanted to win a gold medal for Cross River State but it is one of those things.

"I am certain I won the fight but the result was done to favour the boxer from the host state.

"I had the game under control and the only thing I didn't do was to knock him out.

"I didn't know why the result was changed in the favour of Team Delta.

"You keep on learning every day.

"I have put the National Sports Festival and everything that transpired behind me.

"I want to continue training harder and ensure I am ready for the African Games."

Onyekwere is seen as one of Nigeria's brightest boxing talents following his podium finish in Birmingham last year.

He fell to a comprehensive semi-final defeat in the men's super-heavyweight tournament at the hands of India's Sagar Ahlawat, but still ended up as the country's only male boxer to win a medal at the Games.

Accra 2023 is set to take place from August 4 to 19 and is due to be Ghana's first time hosting the continental event.

Boxing is due to take place at the Borteyman Sports Complex, which is also set to stage aquatics, badminton, football, handball, judo, karate, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting.
