Jaroslav Smedek captured men’s singles and mixed doubles gold medals on a memorable day for the Czech tennis player at the Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul in Brazil.

Smedek defeated Hungary’s Gabor Mathe 6-3, 7-6 in the men’s singles final before teaming up with Katherina Blascikova to clinch the mixed doubles crown.

The Czech pair proved too strong for Lin Chia-Wen and Wang Chun-Wei of Chinese Taipei, running out 6-4, 6-2 winners.

India’s Prithvi Sekhar clinched men’s singles bronze with a 6-2, 6-1 thrashing of Marino Kegl of Slovenia.

An-all Indian mixed doubles bronze medal match was won by Sekhar and Jafreen Shaik who thumped Bhavani Kedia and Dhananjay Dubey 6-1, 6-2.

Heike Albrecht-Schroeder of Germany clinched the women’s singles title with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Lin, while Ho Chiu-Mei of Chinese Taipei beat Israel’s Rotem Ashkenazy 6-3, 6-3 to seal bronze.

Ukraine extended their lead at the top of the medals table after defeating the United States 91-66 in the men’s basketball final.

The US secured top spot in the women’s basketball competition, defeating Italy 91-77.

There were all-Ukrainian finals in both the men’s and women’s beach volleyball events, with the first and second teams playing each other.

The first team won on both occasions.

Iran and Lithuania won the respective men’s and women’s bronze medals.

There were victories for Germany and Croatia in the men’s handball semi-finals.

Germany overcame Turkey 34-22, while Croatia beat Serbia 32-18.
