The United States are seeking to retain their overall title at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Cheerleading Championships as the country hosts the first in-person edition of the event since 2019.

Competition is due to start tomorrow at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando and conclude on Saturday (April 22).

There are senior, junior and youth categories for the hip hop, pom and jazz categories, while two adaptive abilities unified competitions are scheduled in hip hop and pom.

Also on the programme is special abilities unified hip hop and unified pom and special abilities traditional hip hop and traditional pom events.

The Americans topped the medals table in 2021 with six golds and one bronze.

That event was staged remotely due to COVID-19-related concerns, while the 2020 edition was cancelled altogether because of the pandemic.

Japan took pocketed four gold and four silver medals to take second place while Finland completed  the top three with two gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

The US go into the World Championships in good form having just come off the back of a leading performance at the ICU Pan-American Cheerleading Championships, where they claimed seven gold medals and one silver.

Americans also won 18 medals during the 2019 World Championships to top the medals table.

Delegations from more than 50 countries are set to compete in Florida.

The action is set to begin tomorrow with the youth pom event, before the senior competition takes place over the following two days.
