West Indies edged past Bangladesh as Super 12s action continued on an exciting day at the Men’s Twenty20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

A crucial contest in Group One at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium between two winless sides, saw holders the West Indies edge home by three runs off the final ball.

The West Indies struggled early in their innings and found themselves 32-3 in the seventh over.

Roston Chase hit 39 and wicketkeeper Nicolas Pooran made 40, which included four sixes, as the West Indies found momentum in the latter part of the innings, posting 142-7.

Bangladesh lost two early wickets during the first six powerplay overs in their reply, but Tigers wicketkeeper Liton Das kept his side in with a chance courtesy of a knock of 44.

Das holed out with an over to spare with the West Indies now in the box seat as their opponents required 13 runs off the last over.

Bangladesh took the contest to the final ball, but were unable to hit the required boundary, allowing the West Indies to register their first win of the tournament.

The second game of the day at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium pitted Pakistan, who had won their opening two Group Two games, against Afghanistan, who won their opening match of the Super12 phase against Scotland.

After electing to bat, Afghanistan slumped to 39-4 inside the six over powerplay, and were thankful for the performances of captain Mohammad Nabi and Gulbadin Naib, who both scored 35, to help them post 147-6.

Pakistan started their reply strongly, despite losing an early wicket, thanks to a 63-run partnership between captain Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman.

Following the departure of Shoaib Malik for 19, Pakistan still required 26 runs off 13 balls, but phenomenal hitting from Asif Ali, striking 25 runs off seven balls, saw them secure victory by five wickets with an over to spare.

The victory puts Pakistan top of their group with six points, and in a strong position to advance to the semi-finals.

Tomorrow sees two more matches in Group One, including England and Australia, who are both undefeated after two matches, meeting in Dubai.
