Cuba and Mexico have advanced to the semi-finals of the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Men's Continental Volleyball Championship in Durango, having finished their respective groups unbeaten.

Following victories over Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, Cuba defeated the United States in straight sets 25-23, 25-23, 25-20.

Miguel Angel López was the top scorer with 13 for Cuba, backed by Jesús Herrera, who scored 11 points.

Finishing top of Group B ensures a bye to the semi-finals, while the US have to settle for the quarter-finals after placing second.

In the other Group B game, the Dominican Republic came from a set down to defeat Guatemala 29-31, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19.

Henry Tapia scored a colossal 27 points and was backed up well by attacking partners Henry López and Hector Cruz who scored 17 and 16 respectively.

The Caribbean nation's victory ensured they progressed to the quarter-finals, while their opponent's loss meant they were eliminated from progressing in the tournament.

Hosts Mexico defeated Canada 25-21, 28-26, 25-21 to join Cuba in the semi-finals.

Diego González scored 13 points, nullifying the 16 scored by Canadian Xander Ketrzynski.

Puerto Rico finished second in Group A behind the hosts, beating Trinidad and Tobago 25-17, 25-16, 25-18.

Pelegrin Vargas top scored with 11 points; Gabriel García contributed 10 points despite only playing the first two sets.

They now are set to play the Dominican Republic in the quarter-finals, while Canada face the US.

As bottom-of-the-table teams, Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala are set to play in classification games for places fifth to eighth.

Guatemala will play the loser of the US and Canada; Trinidad and Tobago will face either the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico.

Mexico will play the winner of the tie between the US and Canada, while Cuba face either the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico.

The quarter-finals will be played tomorrow, with the tournament reaching a climax on Monday (August 23).
