Cuba, Mexico and the United States extended their winning streaks to two matches on the second day of action in the Men's North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Continental Championship in Durango in Mexico.

Cuba, the defending champions, followed up victory against the Dominican Republic with a resounding 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Guatemala.

Outside hitter Julio César Cárdenas led Cuba’s scorers with 12 points, while middle blocker José Israel Masso contributed 11 points.

Cuban coach Yosvani Muñoz said: "Technically speaking Guatemala is inferior to us, but they came out to play us well and they pushed hard in the first set where we committed too many errors.

"The team recovered and I had the chance to rest some of our regular players.

"We usually get too relaxed playing against inferior teams."

In the other Pool B game, the US defeated the Dominican Republic 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24 as Jake Hanes scored a tournament high 28 points.

The US and Cuba will meet in the final round of pool matches tomorrow.

Hanes said: "We really enjoyed ourselves out there.

"We are a new team, but I think despite the short time we’ve been together, we trust each other a lot.

"Every time someone does something good we are really excited for each other.

"We had solid communication and we were much faster today and it was easy to get it going offensively and defensively."

In Pool A, Mexico continue to lead the way, coming from one set down to earn their second victory of the tournament against Puerto Rico.

Outside hitter Josué López led the team with 20 points.

"The difference between the first set and the rest of the match was our serves, they were lazy and we also committed receiving errors," López said.

"We were able to cause some damage with our serves from the second set on and that helped us a lot.

"Tomorrow we close pool play and our goal is to finish first, we will work hard to beat Canada, and we are not giving up."

Canada earned their first victory of the championship, defeating Trinidad and Tobago 25-22, 25-18, 25-14.

Outside hitter Brandon Kippers scored a match high 15 points.

Looking forward to their final pool match against leaders and hosts Mexico, Canada coach Larry McKay said: "The players played really well.

"When they feel they can perform well, I try to stay out of their way, they have all the instructions they need.

"It was a very good competition against Trinidad and Tobago and we’re grateful for our success.

"We’re looking forward to our next opportunity to play; it will be a very strong Mexico team."

Pool play concludes tomorrow as Mexico face Canada and Trinidad and Tobago face Puertico in Pool A.

Cuba and the US will face off to determine the Pool B winners, with Guatemala and the Dominican Republic rounding proceedings.
