Indian cricket great Sachin Tendulkar says he hopes to be home in a few days after being admitted to hospital as he continues his recovery from COVID-19.

Tendulkar tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

The 47-year-old tweeted yesterday that he decided to go to a hospital in Mumbai as a precautionary measure, following medical advice.

"Thank you for your wishes and prayers," Tendulkar tweeted.

"As a matter of abundant precaution under medical advice, I have been hospitalised.

"I hope to be back home in a few days.

"Take care and stay safe everyone.

"Wishing all Indians & my teammates on the 10th anniversary of our World Cup win."

Tendulkar retired from cricket in 2013, and is viewed as one of the sport’s best ever players.

Tendulkar is the highest international run scorer in both test and one-day formats, having scored 15,921 and 18,426 in the respective formats.

He is the only batsman to have achieved 100 international centuries.

India has seen a steep increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks.

The country recorded 89,129 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, the highest figure in six months.
