Reigning Olympic normal hill champion Andreas Wellinger is set to make his long-awaited comeback tomorrow at the first International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup event of the 2020-2021 season.

The German missed the entirety of last season following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear.

A broken collarbone suffered while surfing in Australia further delayed his recovery, but Wellinger is now ready to return to competitive action in Wisla in Poland.

It is the site of his first solo World Cup triumph, in 2014.

The German has since won two more individual World Cup events, three medals at the 2017 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and four Olympic medals.

Wellinger won individual normal hill gold, individual large hill silver and team large hill silver at Pyeongchang 2018, as well as team large hill gold at Sochi 2014.

Karl Geiger, second in the overall World Cup standings last season, joins Wellinger in the German squad for the event on the large Adam Małysz Ski Jumping Hill.

Austrian Stefan Kraft, last season's overall World Cup winner, is also due to compete in Poland - where only men's contests are scheduled.

Poles Dawid Kubacki and Kamil Stoch, who came third on this hill a season ago, appear poised to lead the home charge.

Japan's Ryōyū Kobayashi - third in the overall World Cup standings last season - and Norway's Daniel-André Tande, who won the Wisla World Cup leg in 2019, are also athletes to watch.

Norwegian Olympic individual normal hill champion Johann André Forfang has been omitted from his country's team, however, while Finland are not competing because of coronavirus concerns.

Qualifying is due to take place tomorrow, before a team competition on November 21 and an individual event on November 22.

Germany are the reigning Nations Cup champions, but Austria won the Wisla team event last season.
