Luxembourg won five of the 12 swimming gold medals available on the opening day of the Games of the Small States of Europe in Montenegro.

Two of the country's victories at Morača Sports Center in Podgorica came courtesy of Raphaël Stacchiotti, who came out on top in the men's 200 metres backstroke in 2 min 5.03sec and men's 200m medley in 2:03.11.

There was also success for Julien Henx in the men's 100m freestyle in 51.05, Pit Brandenburger in the men's 1,500m freestyle in 15:47.49, and the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team of Henx, Brandenburger, Bob Sauber and Stacchiotti in 3:26.43.

Monaco and Liechtenstein each claimed three swimming gold medals on day one of competition.

Two of Monaco's were won by Cassandra Petit, who prevailed in the women's 100m freestyle in 56.40 and women's 200m medley in 2:21.38.

The nation's third title came in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay in 3:53.33, thanks to the quartet of Pauline Viste, Petit, Laéticia Antunes Da Costa and Tifenn Bertaux.

Liechtenstein also had a double victor in Julia Hassler as she topped the women's 200m butterfly and women’s 800m freestyle podiums in times of 2:15.39 and 8:46.60, respectively.

Completing the country's list of winners was Christoph Martin Meier after he triumphed in the men’s 200m butterfly in 2:02.34.

Today's one other swimming gold medallist went the way of Iceland's Eygló ósk Gústafsdóttir in the women's 200m backstroke in 2:17.36.

Medals were also awarded today in judo with hosts Montenegro securing three golds.

There were gold medal match wins for Jusuf Nurković over Malta’s Jeremy Saywell in the men's under-66 kilograms category, Nikola Gardašević over Luxembourg’s Claudio Miguel Nunes Dos Santos in the men's under-73kg category, and Danilo Pantić over Cyprus’ Georgios Kroussaniotakis in the men's under-100kg category.

Other final victors included Cyprus’ Sofia Asvesta over Luxembourg’s Kim Eiden in the women’s under-52kg, Monaco’s Tizie Gnamien over Cyprus’ Aristos Michael in the men’s under-81kg, and Liechtenstein’s Raphael Joel Schwendinger over Iceland’s Egill Blöndal in the men’s under-90kg.

Competition in Montenegro is due to continue tomorrow.

Medals will be up for grabs in athletics and swimming.
