The Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) celebrated the 70th anniversary of Olympic Day with an event held under the theme "United By".

The organisation stated they were among several National Olympic Committees (NOC) to mark the day.

Olympic athletes, leaders of sport and members of the general public were claimed to have participated across Botswana.

The BNOC believe the day highlights sport’s ability to unite regardless of age, gender, religion, nationality, ability, and works to build a unified celebration of Olympic ideas and values.

"Sport has the power to unite through passion, teamwork, commitment, loss and victory," the BNOC stated.

"It unites by creating a shared well-being of body and mind.

"United By celebrates the power of Olympism to have a lasting positive impact on people's well-being - physically, mentally and socially - every day.

"It shows the values of Olympism and the global community it creates, building lifelong relationships that foster mutual respect amongst all."

Olympic Day is held annually on June 23 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games in 1894.

It is aimed at encouraging fitness, well-being, culture and education, along with promoting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

The BNOC highlighted the International Olympic Committee’s aim to use sport to create a better world by staging a Olympism in Action Forum.

The forum will be held in Buenos Aires on October 5 and 6, during the Youth Olympic Games.

Botswana are one of four candidates seeking to host the 2022 edition of the Games.

Abuja in Nigeria and Dakar in Senegal are also under consideration, along with a Tunisian bid from Tunis.

The Tunis bid has been put on hold by the IOC until they have taken steps to end restrictions on Israeli athletes competing at events in the country.
