Fiji and New Zealand progressed to the quarter-finals of the latest HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series event with unbeaten records as action begun today in Vancouver.

The Fijians started their Pool C campaign at BC Place with a thumping 45-5 win over Spain before beating France 38-7 and Kenya 24-21.

Their match with Kenya, similarly unbeaten in the first two rounds with a 14-7 win over France and a 43-0 victory over Spain, was a group decider.

With Fiji leading 12-7 going into the second-half, it was Kenya who responded first with a try from Eden Agero within 19 seconds.

Fiji answered with two more tries, this time from Amenoni Nasilasila and Mesulame Kunavula, and, although Kenya replied in the last seconds of the match with a try from Jeffrey Oluoch and a Samuel Oliech conversion, it was not enough to catch their opponents.

Awaiting Fiji in the quarter-finals are Argentina, runners-up to England in Pool B.

New Zealand, meanwhile, picked up the first of their three Pool D wins by defeating Scotland 31-26.

They then went onto overcome Russia 31-5 and 2018 Sevens Series leaders South Africa 33-14.

Standing between New Zealand and a place in the semi-finals are the United States, the Las Vegas winners who were second-place finishers in Pool A behind Australia.

Completing the quarter-final line-up are matches pitting Australia against Pool D runners-up South Africa, and England against Pool C runners-up Kenya.

England, the 2017 Vancouver title winners, topped Pool B on points difference as they finished level with Las Vegas runners-up Argentina and Samoa.

Canada gave the home crowd much to cheer about, opening their account with a 19-19 draw against Australia and a narrow 28-21 loss to Las Vegas champions the US in the last play of the second half.

In their final match of the day, Canada beat Uruguay 47-5 but just missed out on a place in the quarter-finals after Australia beat the US 31-21 in the closing Pool A contest.

Canada’s Nathan Hirayama did, however, secure his own milestone as he passed sevens’ great Waisale Serevi of Fiji on the all-time points table with a total of 1,328.

Uruguay join Canada in the Challenge Trophy quarter-finals alongside Samoa, Wales, France, Spain, Scotland and Russia.

Canada face Scotland, while France meet Wales, Russia go up against Uruguay and Samoa do battle with Spain.

South Africa lead the 2018 Sevens Series standings with 92 points, ahead of New Zealand on 82 points.

The five tournaments held thus far have produced five different winners - South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the US.
