PV Sindhu was unable to secure victory at her home event as the Olympic silver medallist suffered defeat in the women’s singles final at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) India Open in New Delhi.

An expectant crowd were made to wait for the final match of the day at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium to see whether Sindhu could triumph against the United States’ Beiwen Zhang at this BWF World Tour Super 500 event.

The match did not disappoint as a spectacle, with the opening game proving a tightly fought contest, which Zhang won 21-18.

Sindhu responded from the setback in fine fashion, with the Indian star dominating the second game to level the match.

She was unable to maintain her momentum in the decider, howevver, with both players proving to be evenly matched as the tie approached its finale.

Zhang earned key points at the decisive stage of the contest, as the 27-year-old American, who was born in China and has previously represented Singapore, edged the home favourite, ultimately triumphing by a 21-18, 11-21, 22-20 score line.

The men’s singles final proved a more one-sided affair as China’s Shi Yugi stormed to the title.

The fourth seed produced an impressive display to upset the ranked Chou Tien Chen, beating the Chinese Taipei player 21-18, 21-14.

All three doubles finals ended straight games with Indonesia celebrating two successes.

Their top seeded men’s doubles players Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya emerged as 21-14, 21-16 winners against Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen.

Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu sealed Indonesia’s second success of the day, the third seeds overcoming Jongolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai.

The Thai pairing were narrow favourites for the encounter but were unable to prevent Polii and Rahayu from securing a 21-18, 21-15 victory.

Indonesia were denied a hat-trick victories, howeer, with Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti suffering defeat in the mixed doubles.

They fell to a 21-14, 21-15 defeat against Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Christinna Pedersen.
