Germany's Michael Jung will be crowned as the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Classics champion for the second year in a row at the Burghley Horse Trials, which begin tomorrow.

The competition at Burghley House in English county Lincolnshire is the sixth and final leg of the prestigious three-day evening series for 2016-2017.

Jung, who won his maiden Classics title last term, won the Kentucky Three-Day Event in Lexington in April and finished second at both the Les 4 Etoiles de Pau and the Badminton Horse Trials this term.

The 35-year-old triple Olympic champion enters the competition after two silver medals at the European Eventing Championships in Poland and has 39 points on top of the Classics leaderboard.

He will again ride La Biosthetique Sam in Burghley, a venue where he won in 2015.

Frenchman Maxime Livio is currently Jung's nearest challenger with 33 Classics points and was the only rider who could overhaul him at the top.

This season's Pau champion was due to ride Qalao Des Mers but has withdrawn to hand Jung the title.

Other contenders at the event include Badminton champion Andrew Nicholson of New Zealand, riding Teseo, and Britain's Nicola Wilson, who is currently third in the Classics standings after a second place in Luhmühlen and a fourth place finish in Pau.

Wilson will ride on One Too Many but, with 15 points available for a win, cannot catch Jung as she currently has a total of 20.

Competition will begin with two days of dressage, starting tomorrow.

Cross-country will be held on Saturday (September 2) with show jumping the following day.
