Norway’s Edvald Boasson Hagen and Alexander Kristoff are among the favourites for the men’s elite road race title at the European Cycling Union (UEC) Road Championships in Herning.

The duo are viewed as likely contenders if the 241 kilometre race concludes in a sprint finish in the Danish city on August 6.

Both Norwegians have enjoyed recent success as Boasson Hagen won stage 19 of the Tour de France, while Kristoff triumphed at the RideLondon Classic

Italy’s Elia Viviani has also been tipped for success, along with Denmark’s Magnus Cort, France’s Bryan Coquard and Ireland’s Sam Bennett.

Slovakia’s Peter Sagan, the reigning world champion, will not defend his European crown at the Championships due to the fact he is participating in the Tour of Poland.

Defending women’s champion Anna van der Breggen is poised to start and will be supported by a strong Dutch team.
