Switzerland’s Florian Vogel ended Julien Absalon’s domination of the men’s cross-country event at the European Mountain Bike Championships by triumphing in the Italian commune of Darfo Boario Terme today.

Absalon had won the past four editions of the event, but the Frenchman would have to settle for second position today.

The seven lap event saw Vogel battle through to claim victory in a time of 1 hour, 24min and 7.22sec.

He was followed by Absaslon, with the Frenchman crossing just 10 seconds off the pace in 1:24:17.18.

The podium was completed by Germany’s Manuel Fumic, who finished in 1:24:47.04.

Ukraine's Yana Belomoina triumphed in the women’s elite race, after powering away from the field.

Belomoina, who won her maiden International Cycling Union World Cup back in May, secured gold in a time of 1:24:35.06.

Denmark’s Linda Indergand ended 3:26 down to take the silver medal, while Norway’s Gunn-Rita Dahle achieved a time of 1:28:43.43 for bronze.

He finished in a time of 1:13:16.09 to claim the victory, with team-mate Nadir Colledani ending second on 1:13:22.03.

Denmark’s Simon Andreassen rounded off the podium by ending in 1:14:30.85.
