Ukraine’s Olena Starikova won individual sprint gold as the European Track Junior and Under-23 Championships continued in Anadia.

Starikova made it through the early rounds of the competition at the Sangalhos Velodrome, before setting up a semi-final against The Netherlands’ Hetty Van de Wouw.

Having overcome the Dutchwomen in straight riders, Starikova was faced with the final hurdle in the form of Pauline Grabosch of Germany.

Starikova, who narrowly missed out on podium finishes at two World Cup events this season, won both rides in the final to secure gold.

The podium was completed by Van de Wouw, who beat Migle Marozaite of Lithuania to bronze.

Tatjana Paller won the final sprint of the women’s under-23 points race to secure the gold medal, with the German holding off the challenge of Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen.

Paller finished on 55 points to Dideriksen’s 43, while Britain’s Manon Lloyd was one point further adrift to end as the bronze medallist.

Denmark’s Niklas Larsen convincingly won the men’s points race with a total of 103, with Britain’s Ethan Hayter some way back on 76 as the runner-up.

Ireland’s Mark Downey took bronze on 72.

The women’s junior 500 metres time trial was won by France’s Mathilde Gros in a time of 34.672sec, with Germany’s Lea Friedrich and Britain’s Lauren Bate rounding off the podium on 34.735 and 35.407.

France also had success in the men’s junior sprint as Rayan Helal beat Russia’s Dmitry Nesterov in straight rides.

Nesterov’s team-mate Pavel Perchuk earned the bronze medal.
