The world champion would ultimately come through to take victory in the final, holding off the challenge of Twan van Gendt of Tthe Netherlands to win gold.

Fellow French rider Sylvain Andre took the bronze.

“I was a little tired, but the audience was extraordinary,” said Daudet.

“It was exceptional, thanks to my compatriots who made the trip here, who came to attend these European Championships.

“I was a bit pushy on the start, as I said, but I quickly picked up on the first bump.”

The Netherlands’ Laura Smulders, a bronze medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, claimed gold in the women’s elite race.

Smulders finished ahead of Belgium’s Elke Vanhoof and Simone Tetsche Christensen of Denmark, who earned silver and bronze medals respectively.

Britain celebrate gold in the women’s junior event, with Blaine Ridge-Davis claiming victory.

She was followed across the line by the Latvian pairing of Vineta Petersone and Vanesa Buldinska.

The men’s junior title was claimed by Cédric Butti of Switzerland, who finished clear of team-mate Gil Brunner and France’s Titouan Blanchod.
