World number one Sir Andy Murray paid tribute to the victims of the recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester after he booked his place in the quarter-finals of the French Open at Roland Garros today.

The three-time Grand Slam champion and double Olympic gold medallist progressed with a comfortable 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Russia's Karen Khachanov as he continued his resurgence in form.

The 30-year-old Briton, runner-up at last year's French Open, said in his post-match on-court interview that "I'm sure everyone will join me in sharing the fact that our thoughts and prayers are with those affected".

Seven people were killed and as many as 48 were injured in a terrorist attack in London on Saturday (June 3), where three attackers drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before continuing to stab others at Borough Market in the capital city.

Britain had earlier been targeted by a bombing at an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena on May 22, which killed 23 people.

"It was a terrible tragedy in London and also in Manchester only a few weeks ago," Sir Andy, who will play Kei Nishikori of Japan in the last eight, said.

Sir Andy added: "Paris has had some problems in the last few years and I'm sure everyone will join me in sharing the fact that our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this.

"It is something which has affected large parts of Europe and all over the world.

"I appreciate everyone still coming out to support us and I'm grateful I can perform in front of you."

Nishikori set up a meeting with the top seed after he bounced back from losing the opening set to love to beat Spain's Fernando Verdasco 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, 2015 champion Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, the third seed, made light work of tricky French opponent Gaël Monfils with a 7-5, 7-6, 6-2 win.

Wawrinka is scheduled to face seventh seed Marin Cilic of Croatia after South African Kevin Anderson retired hurt when trailing 6-3, 3-0.

In the women's singles event, third seed Simona Halep of Romania eased into the last eight with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.

Elina Svitolina of Ukraine awaits for Halep in the quarter-finals after she defeated Petra Martić of Croatia 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
