Spain's Rafael Nadal cruised into the fourth round of the French Open with a sensational victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia at Roland Garros today.

The fourth seed required just 90 minutes to secure a 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The Spaniard has now won 98 of 100 best-of-five set clay-court matches in his career and has also won 75 of 77 matches at Roland Garros.

"Today was one of the best matches I have ever played, without a doubt,” Nadal said.

“I am really happy because I have a really good feeling.

"Every day my training is going very well, my practice.

"When I have a match, I play very well."

The 14-time Grand Slam champion will now face compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut in the next round.

He overcame Jiří Veselý of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Reigning champion Novak Djokovic is also through after beating Argentine Diego Schwartzman in five sets.

The Serbian came back from two sets to one down to win 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 against his unseeded opponent.

The 30-year-old endured a frustrating afternoon, making 55 unforced errors and confronting umpire Carlos Ramos over a conduct warning.

Belgium's David Goffin retired with an ankle problem in his match against Horacio Zeballos of Argentina.

The 10th seed was 5-4 up before he slid into a cover, injuring his right ankle which forced him to conclude the match prematurely.

Zeballos will now play Austria's Dominic Thiem in the next round after he overcame Steve Johnson of the United States 6-1, 7-6, 6-3.

Canada's Milos Raonic also reached the last 16 after his opponent, Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, retired due to a thigh injury.

Raonic won the first set 6-1 in 21 minutes and led 1-0 in the second when the Spaniard ended the contest.

The Canadian will now face another Spaniard in Pablo Carreno Busta, who beat Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

In the women's singles event, defending champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain made it through to the fourth round. 

She claimed a 7-5, 6-2 straight sets win over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva.

Muguruza will face France's 13th seed Kristina Mladenovic in the last 16.

Samantha Stosur also progressed.

The Australian, a French Open finalist in 2010 and a semi-finalist in 2009, 2012 and 2016, collected an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory over American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Venus Williams of the US secured her place in the next round this evening with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Belgium's Elise Mertens.
