Rain caused the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy warm-up match between Australia and Pakistan to be abandoned with just 10.2 overs played today.

Match officials called off the game at 2.05pm local time after proceedings had initially been delayed by nearly two hours before any action could happen.

Covers were still on the pitch at Edgbaston in Birmingham when play was due to begin at 10.30am, but by 12pm, the conditions had become good enough for the teams to enter the field.

Due to the loss of time, both sides would only face 34 overs each.

Australian captain Steven Smith won the toss and elected to bat, but 62 balls after starting, the rain returned and this time it proved terminal for the match.

In the action which was completed during that period, Australia managed to notch up 57 runs for loss of one wicket, as David Warner was caught by Sarfraz Ahmed off Mohammad Amir’s bowling after scoring 11.

Aaron Finch had reached 36 not out and Smith eight by the time play was halted.

Tomorrow will see the last couple of warm-up matches contested between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Edgbaston while India take on Bangladesh at The Oval in London.

This year’s tournament, being hosted in England and Wales, officially gets under way on Thursday (June 1).

The final will be played on June 18.
