Australia’s captain David Warner won the toss and elected to field and after an initial good start by Sri Lanka, his side picked up three wickets in 29 balls to make the score 71-3.

The Asian side looked to be wobbling when Dinesh Chandimal was bowled by paceman James Pattison for 17 with the total on 92, but a 60 partnership between captain Angelo Mathews and Chamara Kapugedera steadied the innings.

After the latter was caught and bowled by Travis Head for 30, Mathews continued to build towards a decent total with Asela Gunaratne.

It looked like Mathews was looking like a certainty for a hundred, but he ended up falling five short as he was caught by Adam Zampa off Moises Henriques, who picked up three wickets for Australia.

His sixth wicket partnership with Gunaratne ended on 91 and his colleague continued through the innings, finishing with a knock of 70 not out from 56 balls as Sri Lanka posted a total of 318-7.

Australia’s response started well with a 64 run partnership between Finch and Warner before the latter fell for 19.

Finch, known for his powerful hitting ability with the bat, proved to be the accelerator of the innings as he raced along to a century and by the time he was bowled by Nuwan Pradeep, who ended up with three wickets for 57 runs, he had smashed 137 runs out of his side’s total of 218.

A mini stutter came to the Aussie innings as Glenn Maxwell was out leg before wicket the following ball after Finch’s departure before Lasith Malinga bowled Matthew Wade for 13.

The pace of the innings noticeably slowed up and the Sri Lankans picked up another couple of wickets as the balls ticked down.

However, Head had tried to take over from Finch and was the man who saw the team over the line as his 85 not out, which saw him hit seven fours in 73 balls, edged the team to victory.

The warm-up matches are being played before the start of the tournament being hosted by England and Wales, which will see its first game on June 1.

Tomorrow, Bangladesh and Pakistan face each other at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
