Tove Alexandersson secured her third gold medal of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) World Ski Orienteering Championships by winning the women's middle distance race in Krasnoyarsk today.

The Swede produced another flawless display on her way to topping the podium once again in the Russian city.

Alexandersson proved far too strong for the rest of the field, clocking a time of 32 min 09sec, over a minute-and-a-half quicker than nearest challenger Polina Frolova of Russia.

Frolova did enough for the silver medal, much to the delight of the home crowd, as she crossed the line in 33:46.

Finland's Salla Koskela took home the bronze, completing an exact replica of the sprint podium from earlier on at the event in the Russian city, which is also due to host the 2019 Winter Universiade.

After the race, International Orienteering Federation President Leho Haldna revealed they were looking into the prospect of hosting the event on an annual rather than biennial basis.

"I am very pleased with the organisation level of the World Championships in Krasnoyarsk," he said.

"You have a big team involved in it which is surely connected with the fact that our Championships is a test event for the Winter Universiade 2019.

"Everything is organised at the highest level: great atmosphere at the stadium, lots of spectators and a big number of mass media.

"Ski orienteering does not usually attract that much interest.

"Concerning the competitions themselves, traditional leaders are the representatives of Sweden and Russia.

"Finland comes behind them so far but I think the Finns will do better by the end of the Championship.

"The next World Championship will take place in Sweden in two years.

"After it we plan to hold such competitions annually.

"So there is a good chance that we will be back to Russia once again.

"I cannot guarantee Krasnoyarsk will be that place since ski orienteering is well developed in many regions of your country and nearly all of them are interested in conducting such a major international event in their respective cities."
