France’s Marie Martinod made a strong start to halfpipe competition at the Bokwang Phoenix Park as the International Ski Federation (FIS) Freestyle Skiing World Cup leader finished top of the qualification standings.

The qualification was taking place after two days of training at the venue, giving skiers an opportunity to assess the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic venue ahead of the test event.

Martinod appears to have warmed to her surroundings, with the Frenchwoman producing a strong first run score of 92.80 points to move to the top of the standings.

She was also able to put together a second excellent effort to score 90.00, which despite failing to improve her total, displayed that the World Cup leader will be the one to beat in the final.

Last year’s World Cup winner Devin Logan qualified in second place by scoring 90.40, with Canada’s Cassie Sharpe achieving 89.40 to round off the top three.

Japan’s Ayana Onozuka and the American duo of Brita Sigourney and Annalisa Drew would also progress to the six-woman final.

Maddie Bowman, who beat Martinod to gold at the Sochi 2014 Olympics, missed out on the final after finishing in seventh place.

The men’s competition saw Torin Yater-Wallace head the leaderboard, with the American scoring 94.20.

He was followed by his team-mate Alex Ferreira and Noah Bowman of Canada, who scored 93.20 and 92.40 respectively.

The French pairing of Ben Valentin and Kevin Rolland finished in the top five to comfortably secure passage to the 10-man final.

Canada’s Mike Riddle and Simon d'Artois also advanced along with New Zealand’s Nico Porteous and Americans Aaron Blunck and Taylor Seaton.

The men’s and women’s finals are both scheduled to take place on Saturday (February 18).

Tomorrow will see the snowboarders have their turn on the halfpipe as they seek to qualify for their finals, which will be held on Sunday (February 19).
