The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) has announced that its Board of Directors, based on the recommendation of its Medical and Anti-Doping Committee, has approved a transgender athlete policy.

Those switching from female to male are eligible to compete in the male category, and can count towards the male ratio in mixed category competitions if they meet certain conditions.

They include that once an athlete begins hormone therapy, he is only eligible to compete in the male category and to be counted toward the male ratio in the mixed category.

An athlete must also demonstrate that his total testosterone levels are not in excess of the internationally accepted standard for transgender treatment.

A blood test must also be shown to demonstrate hormone levels at two time points, a year or more before an event and within six months of the event.

Meanwhile, the policy also outlines a set of guidelines for those transitioning from male to female.

The athlete must demonstrate that her total testosterone level is below an agreed level prior to her first competition.

They must also take a blood test in the same time periods prior to an event as females transferring to males.

Compliance with these conditions may be monitored for testing by the WFDF.

If hormone levels are found to be in excess of the internationally accepted standard for transgender treatment, the athlete’s eligibility for competition may be suspended until androgenic hormone levels are found to be within accepted limits.

Also outlined in the document is the WFDF's reaffirmation that any reported discriminatory actions based on gender identity will be investigated by the WFDF and sanctions imposed when appropriate.

"The chair of our Medical and Anti-Doping Committee and board member Jamie Nuwer guided us through the thorough evaluation process since the International Olympic Committee Consensus Meeting on Sex Reassignment and Hyperandrogenism in November 2015," said WFDF President Robert Rauch.

"There has been a growing recognition of the importance of autonomy of gender identity in society worldwide.

"It is necessary to ensure insofar as possible that transgender athletes are not excluded from the opportunity to participate in flying disc sports events, while ensuring fair competition for all other athletes.

"This policy is designed to help protect our transgender athletes’ rights to participate in the gender division in which they identify at WFDF events."
