Porntip Buranaprasertsuk was surprisingly knocked-out of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Open today after falling to defeat against Malaysia’s Jin Wei Goh in front of a home crowd at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.

The number two seed was beaten 16-21, 21-16, 17-21 by Goh, whose reward for victory in the a Grand Prix Gold event is a quarter-final clash with compatriot Yen Mei Ho.

Ho proved too strong for number five seed Yui Hashimoto of Japan, triumphing 21-19, 14-21, 21-16.

The highest seed still in the women’s singles draw is third-ranked Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand, a comfortable 21-11, 21-11 victor over Indonesia’s Fitriani Fitriani.

In the men’s singles event, number two seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia advanced through to the last-eight with a 24-22, 21-13 win over Thailand’s Pannawit Thongnuam.

Next up for him is Chinese Taipei’s Hsueh Hsuan Yi, who beat Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-13, 21-17.

The most noticeable casualty was fourth seed Boonsak Ponsana as the Thai lost 24-22, 12-21, 17-21 against Malaysia’s Daren Liew.

Thailand’s Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai continued to justify their top seeding in the women’s doubles by overcoming Chinese Taipei’s Tsun Yu Lin and Kuo Yu Wen 21-10, 21-13.

There were also wins today for Indonesia’s Rian Agung Saputro and Berry Angriawan, the second seeds in the men’s doubles, and Thailand’s Rawinda Prajongjai and Jongkolpha  Kititharakul, the second seeds in the mixed doubles.

Saputro and Angriawan beat Malaysia’s Jian Yi Lee and Zhen Ting Lim 21-12, 21-16, while Prajongjai and Kititharakul defeated Indonesia’s Dian Fitriani and Nadya Melati 21-14, 21-13.

The top seeds in the men’s doubles - Malaysia’s Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan - and the mixed doubles - Thailand's Bodin Isara and Savitree Amitrapai - were eliminated yesterday.
