Men's number one seed Ihsan Maulana Mustofa was knocked out as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Open began in Bangkok today with a host of qualification and first round matches.

The shock result saw the Indonesian world number 23 beaten by Thailand's unseeded home hopeful Suppanyu Avihingsanon in three games.

Avihingsanon made the most of the partisan crowd in Bangkok and took the first game 21-17.

Nerves began to set in though as Mustofa took the second 21-17, before Avihingsanon heroically claimed the third and decisive game 21-18. 

Elsewhere in the men’s competition, Japan's Takuma Ueda progressed after he convincingly beat home favourite Pachaarapo Nipornram.

The ninth seed eased into round two with a straight games win, 21-8, 21-5.

There was a lot of home nation success in the women’s singles qualifiers as no less than nine players progressed to tomorrow's first round.

Banthita Khamsaiton performed most impressively as she swept aside compatriot Nattcha Chatputtar, 21-5, 21-15.

Thai success was also aplenty in the mixed doubles as a number of pairs from the host nation made it through.

In the first match of the day, Thidarat Kleebyeeso and partner Watchara Buranakuea defeated Indonesia’s Hendra Tandjaya and Fitria Ayu Nawangwula, 21-13, 21-18.

There was further delight for Thailand as Pakkawat Vilailak and Supanida Katethong saw off India's Kamaldeep Singh and Malaysia's Zhi Qing Lee in straight games, 21-14, 21-11.

The action is set to continue tomorrow at the the Nimibutr Stadium.

Women’s singles number three seed and home favourite Busanan Ongbumrungpan will be looking to add to the title she won at this year's Indonesian Masters in the women's singles.

The 20-year-old will start her campaign by taking on Ling Fang Hu of Chinese Taipei in round one.

The tournament, a Grand Prix Gold event, will be held until Sunday (October 9) when the finals will take place.

Athletes will be competing for a total prize purse of $120,000 (£93,000/€107,000).
