Fan Zhangdong underlined his status as the next superstar with a crushing 4-0 win over Olympic champion and world number one Ma Long at the China Open in Chengdu.

Fan, 19, was not selected for either the singles or team event's at last month's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro despite being world number two.

Ma instead beat world number four Zhang Jike in an all-Chinese final, while world number three Xu Xin joined to win team gold.

Fan is considered a longer prospect with Tokyo 2020 in mind but he made a point to the selectors by showing glorious form today, however, winning his semi-final 4-2 against Wong Chun-Ting before sweeping past Ma in four straight games.

The Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic champion first won his semi-final 4-2 against Wong Chun-Ting of Hong Kong before going toe to toe with the biggest shotmaker in the sport to win the final 11-9, 13-11, 11-8, 11-5.

Ma, also the world champion, was perhaps tired from a mammoth semi-final which he won 4-3 in a repeat of the Olympic gold medal match against Zhang earlier today.

There were no problems for an Olympic champion in the women's singles, where Ding Ning beat top seed and world number one Liu Shiwen in another all-Chinese final.

Ding went in front and after the opening three ends the second seed was sitting 2-1 up in the first to four games contest

But Liu struck back and edged the fourth game in deuce.

Ding won the crucial fifth and then held her nerve to take the sixth and claim the title 11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 10-12, 12-10, 11-8.

“Thanks for fans support, they have been really nice here," she said.

"Recently I have not had too much systematic training, I am very happy to be the champion here.

"The final match against my friend Liu Shiwen was amazing."
