Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) vice-president Makarita Lenoa has urged the country to back their athletes at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Lenoa was joined by FASANOC finance manager Sharlene Wong in displaying the country’s flag at Fiji Olympic House, which is located on Bau Street in the capital city Suva.

Fiji’s delegation is the country’s largest in Olympic history, predominantly due to qualifying for the men’s football and rugby sevens tournaments.

They qualified for the men's football tournament after an ineligible player row at the 2015 Pacific Games saw New Zealand lose their spot, which they had gained by winning the qualifying event.

The country’s men's rugby sevens team, fresh from having won the World Rugby Sevens Series for the second consecutive year, are considered their best hope of claiming a first Olympic medal.

Fiji have also qualified athletes in archery, judo, shooting, table tennis and weightlifting competitions.

"Let’s show Team Fiji that we are behind them by flying the Fiji flag high from when Team Fiji football starts, to when the last sport Team Fiji will be participating in,” said Wong.

FASANOC have asked members of the public to display the Fiji flag wherever they may be during the Games.

The National Olympic Committee have also claimed that vehicles and people travelling past the Fiji Olympic House have been shouting “go Fiji go” ahead of the delegations’ participation at Rio 2016.

The public can also offer their support by sending in pictures and video to the Team Fiji Facebook page or official Twitter account, using the hashtags “#gofijigo” or “#unitedFJ4Rio”.
