Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) President Spyros Capralos was among those in attendance as the Olympic Champions Associations of Greece and Georgia signed a Memorandum of Cooperation at HOC headquarters in Athens.

Aimed at promoting sports, culture, health and education through the joint actions of their members in the two countries, the cooperation was formalised by the Presidents of the respective Associations, Stavroula Kozompoli and Kakhi Kakhiasvili.

Kozompoli was part of Greece's silver medal-winning women's water polo team at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, while Kakhiasvili is one of only four weightlifters to have won three consecutive gold medals at the Olympics, including at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 when he was competing for Greece having originally been born in Georgia and representing the Unified Team at Barcelona 1992.

Also present was the Ambassador of Georgia in Athens, Josif Nanobashvili, and a number of Olympians.

Both Capralos and Nanobashvili were honoured for their support.

Earlier this year, Capralos received the A G Leventis Excellence Award in recognition of his more than two decades of work supporting Greek sport and Olympism.

He was presented with the title by A G Leventis Foundation Board of Directors chairman George David during a ceremony that saw 33 Greek athletes from 13 sports awarded scholarships from the organisation, including the Olympic Preparation 2014-2015 Scholarship Programme.

The organisation highlighted Capralos' work to implement the "Adopt an athlete on the way to Rio 2016" programme that provide 56 athletes with sponsorship from 29 banks and private companies.
