Jones became Britain’s first-ever gold medallist in taekwondo, topping the podium at London 2012.

Adams, meanwhuile,  achieved a moment of history of her own by becoming the first female Olympic boxing champion at London 2012

Gemma Gibbons, a judo silver medallist at London 2012, has also been included, as has taekwondo bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad.

The British team will compete in 19 disciplines across 13 sports at the inaugural Games in the Azerbaijani capital.

“I am delighted and very honoured to have been chosen once again to represent Great Britain and Team GB at a major Games,” Jones, an international athlete ambassador for Baku 2015, said.

“I’m lucky to have experienced both the Olympic Games at London 2012 and the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and I’m sure that the European Games will prove to be another memorable experience in what is a great city.

“I’m looking forward to being part of a fantastic British team in Baku where we’ll be looking to make our Team GB fans very proud.”

Adams claims the event can prove hugely beneficial to her preparations for next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“It will be great to compete again in the Team GB vest and I am really looking forward to the European Games,” she said.

“I have a very good track record in multi-sports events and I hope this will be another enjoyable experience and useful preparation for the Olympics in Rio next year.”

The first-ever European Games will offer athletes an opportunity in some sports  to earn qualification for Rio 2016,.

These include aquatics, archery, beach volleyball, boxing, judo, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon and wrestling.

They will also compete in two non-Olympic disciplines - aerobic and acrobatic gymnastics - and Team GB Chef de Mission Mark England hailed the size of the squad which will travel to Baku.

“It’s fantastic to be able to announce the athletes who will be competing for Team GB at Baku 2015,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity for many of them to test themselves against Europe’s best, gain crucial multi-sport Games experience or build on their road to Rio 2016.

“I’m also delighted to see such a large team from Great Britain heading out to Baku - our largest travelling delegation since the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games - and I’m sure it’ll be a hugely proud moment for each of them.”
