Baku 2015 has signed an agreement with broadcaster BT Sport, which will see the inaugural European Games screened in Great Britain.

The channel will provide daily coverage of the Games, which are due to take place from June 12 to 28, across their three channels, BT Sport Extra, and digital platforms.

European Olympic Committees President Patrick Hickey had told insidethegames in January that a deal was close with BT Sport, which has emerged in recent times as Sky's main rival in the market for live coverage of Premier League football matches.

“The fit between BT Sport and the European Games is perfect,” said Simon Clegg, chief operating officer of Baku 2015.

“BT Sport have burst onto the British broadcasting scene, and Baku 2015 is the most significant event to join the European sporting calendar in half a century."

In November 2013, BT Sport announced an exclusive £897 million ($1.34 billion/€1.26 billion) three-year deal to broadcast live UEFA Champions League and Europa League football matches.

The broadcaster holds the rights to show all 350 fixtures each season from the 2015-2016 season.

“BT Sport has already proven the high level of their programming through their coverage of the English Premier League, and their ambition is shown by having secured the rights to the UEFA Champions League from next season," added Clegg.

“We are delighted that they have become the latest leading network to ensure the broadcast of the first ever European Games.”

The deal is the latest in a series signed by Baku 2015, with the event’s broadcast reach now stretching to all corners of Europe and across the globe.

Agreements have been signed in the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Latin America and the Arab world, as well as with a host of other European broadcasters.

But there is still no deal with Russia, Europe's biggest country.
