Greece will host the election of the new IOC presidents, the head of the Hellenic Olympic Committee has announced. The torch-lighting ceremony for the Paris 2024 Games will also take place at Ancient Olympia on 16 April.

In an interview with AFP, the president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee has said that Greece wants to be the permanent host of the election of the new presidents of the International Olympic Committee at Ancient Olympia

"My dream is that this election will take place in Ancient Olympia. It will remind everyone where the Games began 2,800 years ago," said Hellenic Olympic Committee president Spyros Capralos. The symbolic importance of this site is unparalleled. "The organisation of the election of the IOC President in Ancient Olympia every eight or twelve years is feasible. I believe it would be a positive boost for everyone in the Olympic movement," he added.

Greece is currently scheduled to host the next IOC presidential election in March 2025, when current IOC President Thomas Bach's term ends. The torch-lighting ceremony for the Paris 2024 Games will also take place in Ancient Olympia on 16 April, in keeping with Olympic tradition.

Ten days later, Nana Mouskouri, one of the best-selling artists of all time, will be invited to perform at the handover of the torch to the Paris organisers at the Panathenaic Stadium.

Capralos said. "We hope that Nana Mouskouri can and will come to the handover ceremony to sing the national anthems. It would be a very special moment because Nana Mouskouri is someone who is highly respected and well known in France and Greece, as well as throughout Europe and the world," said Spyros Capralos.

The first torchbearer will be Stefanos Ntouskos, the Greek Olympic rowing champion at the Tokyo Olympics. He will start the journey on 16 April in Greece, where 600 relay teams will cover a total of 5,000 kilometres. It will end at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on 26 April 2024. The national water polo team, runners-up at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, will be the final torchbearers.
