Harrie Smolders won equestrian's Global Champions Tour Championship title, despite only finishing 27th in the season finale held at Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

Dutch rider Smolders, riding Uricas V/D Kattevennen, had a nervy round knocking down two fences, and then had to sit and wait and find out where his rivals for the individual championship title, Maikel van der Vleuten of the Netherlands and Sweden's Henrik von Eckermann would finish.

Von Eckermann, riding King Edward, knocked a rail down early in the first round to put himself out of contention.

Van Der Vleuten, riding Beauville Z N.O.P, was one of eight riders to go clear in the first round, forcing a jump-off.

In the jump-off, van der Vleuten opted for a risky strategy, knocking a fence down, while also finishing in a slow time, giving the overall crown to Smolders.

Smolders finished with 252 points in the season standings, closely followed by van der Vleuten with 246, and von Eckermann on 245.5.

Victory in the final round in Riyadh went to Germany's Christian Kukuk, riding Checker 47.

Kukuk was one of three riders to go clear during the jump-off but prevailed after completing the course in the quickest time - 37.56sec.
