Australia will host its first International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Beach Volleyball Championships following the award of the 2025 edition to Adelaide.

The announcement came at the conclusion of this year’s Championships, held in Tlaxcala, Mexico.

The 2025 competition will take place at the Drive, a large outdoor multi-sport complex which will be transformed for the occasion into a beach in the heart of the South Australian capital.

The signing ceremony was held ahead of the final rounds of the 2023 Championships at the iconic Tlaxcala arena.

Key figures present at the ceremony included the FIVB President Ary S Graça, Volleyball World chief executive Finn Taylor, Volleyball Australia President Craig Carracher, Volleyball Australia chief executive Andrew Dee, South Australian Government MP Leon Bignell and Jenny Mann of the South Australian Tourism Commission.

"We are delighted to be heading to Australia for the first time in Beach Volleyball World Championships history as the global growth and popularity of the sport continues to accelerate," said Graça.

"Australia, a clear natural fit for beach volleyball, has all the ingredients to put on a spectacular event and I have no doubt that they will."

The Championships is the latest major event to be awarded to Australia as the country prepares to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.

The portfolio includes the Rugby and Netball World Cups in 2027, the International Cricket Council Men's T20 World Cup in 2028 and the Women's Rugby World Cup in 2029.

"Australia's selection as the host for 2025 locks in the next exciting chapter for beach volleyball, and we have no doubt Adelaide will showcase an experience like no other," Taylor said.

This will be only the fourth occasion that the World FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships have been held outside Europe following the first edition in Los Angeles in 1997, Rio de Janeiro in 2003 and the most recent edition in Mexico.

"Australia is excited to be the first Asian host of the Beach Volleyball World Championships and to welcome volleyball fans from all over the world," Carracher said.

"Adelaide is the ideal host city with a proven track record in hosting global events and world-class facilities.

"Adelaide has been the spiritual home of elite beach volleyball in Australia for almost three decades with many of our top athletes training at the SASI based national training centre, home to our beach volleyroos since the Sydney 2000 Olympic preparations."

But the event is not expected to take place on one of the city's world-renowned beaches.

Instead, the competition is set to be held at the Drive, a large outdoor multi-sport complex, which will be transformed for the occasion into a beach in the heart of the city.

"South Australia has a proud history of hosting major events, and we’re going to put on an incredible show for the Beach Volleyball World Championships in 2025," South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas said.
