Wales became the first side to secure a spot in the quarter-finals after a convincing 40-6 win over Australia in Pool C at the OL Stadium in Lyon.

The result leaves the Wallabies, winners of the tournament in 1991 and 1999, facing the prospect of being eliminated at the pool stage for the first time.

Wales got off to a flying start with Gareth Davies scoring an early try after a break from captain Jac Morgan.

Wales suffered a blow in the 12^th minute when fly-half Dan Biggar went off injured, however replacement Gareth Anscombe came to the fore, kicking 23 points.

Anscombe’s boot gave Wales a ten-point lead at the break at 16-6, and a fast start for the Welsh to the second half saw Nick Tompkins gather an Anscombe chip for a second try.

Morgan scored a third try for Wales while three further penalties and a drop goal from Anscombe secured the nation’s biggest ever win over Australia.

Afterwards Australian captain David Porecki described the defeat as "embarrassing", admitting "this one hurts."

In the day’s other match Scotland kept their chances of progressing from Pool B alive with a comprehensive 45-17 win over Tonga at the Stade de Nice.

Hooker George Turner scored Scotland’s first try when he was driven over in the fifth minute, before Solomone Kata responded with a try for Tonga to give them the lead.

Tonga were made to pay for a yellow card for Afusipa Taumoepeau as Scotland secured the bonus point before the break with tries for wingers Duhan van der Merwe and Kyle Steyn, and flanker Rory Darge.

Tonga cut the gap to seven points when skipper Ben Tameifuna smashed his way over the try line in the second half.

Replacement scrum-half George Horne, full-back Blair Kinghorn and replacement wing Darcy Graham all scored as Scotland ran away, winning their first match of the tournament in style.

They now sit third in Pool B with five points, behind South Africa on 10 and Ireland on 14, and with an extra game to play compared to the teams in front of them.
