Denmark is setting its sights on staging the 2030 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships in a bid to mark its national governing body’s 100th anniversary.

Copenhagen is currently hosting the BWF’s flagship event, with competition starting today and due to run until Sunday (August 27).

It is the fifth time the Danish capital has held the event having played host in 1983, 1991, 1999 and 2014.

No other nation has staged it more times and Badminton Denmark President Kristian Pihl revealed that his organisation was also looking to host the event in seven years’ time.

"We have ambitions to get the Championships again," Pihl told insidethegames.

"Hopefully we will have it in 2030.

"That’s not up to us, that’s for the BWF.

"That year, our federation will have its 100th anniversary so that would make history.

"We would have the anniversary and the Championships at the same time.

"Not many countries can brag about having a federation for 100 years.

"It’s seven years away so let’s get this one over before we focus on the next one."

The 6,500-seater Ballerup Super Arena was the venue when Copenhagen last staged the World Championships in 2014.

This year, the event is being held at the Royal Arena which can accommodate more than 10,000 spectators.

"I would say the big difference this year is that it is in the capital and it’s more central," said Pihl.

"It’s in the middle of the city and a bigger venue.

"I can’t recall how many there were in the old arena but not as much as there are here.

"Everything is evolving so if you have done one thing great, if you do the same next time it is not great anymore.

"You need to push the boundaries all the time.

"That’s the focus."

Pihl says he expects the venue to be rocking with the addition of children from schools in the surrounding areas and to be a big success.

"We will definitely have a full house from the quarter-finals onwards," said Pihl.

"It looks very good on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"It’s not full house but still the numbers are good.

"It’s better than we had hoped for so it seems the city is chipping in.

"There are a lot of school kids coming.

"We have a collaboration with the local schools so when they are measuring how big a square is in a mathematics lesson, they will give them a badminton court.

"We give the materials to the schools and that way the kids start badminton instead of playing tennis or not doing anything.

"The schools will bring the kids here so there are at least 500 coming.

"It’s a huge event for us.

"We have had it four times before so this is our fifth time.

"It’s a bigger event now and at a bigger arena.

"We have a very good team.

"We have the Denmark Open every year, so the team have tried something similar for this and just turned it up a notch."
