It is usually held in between outdoor World Championships years, although that has been disrupted by COVID-19.

Serbia's capital Belgrade staged last year's World Indoor Championships in the same year as the outdoor equivalent in Eugene, which was delayed due to the knock-on effect of the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Nanjing in China is also due to stage the World Indoor Championships in 2025, the same year as the outdoor World Championships in Tokyo, following on from postponements in 2020 and 2023.

Hungary's capital Budapest is staging the ongoing outdoor World Championships here until next Sunday (August 27).
