China finished top of the overall medals table, while four more world records were set on the final day of action at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, France.

China completed the nine days of competition with a haul of 16 golds and 45 medals, including two golds on the final day.

One of these was responsible for a world record, with Pengxiang Sun taking the men’s javelin throw F41 title, with a throw of 47.55 metres.

Sun was almost two metres clear of the second-placed athlete Sadegh Sayah Beit of Iran, who finished with 45.46m.

There was more Chinese success in the women’s 100m T35 final, with Xia Zhou taking victory in 13.64 seconds, and her compatriot Qianqian Guo in second in a personal best of 14.01m.

The second field world record of the final day came in the women’s discus throw F38, where Simone Kruger of South Africa triumphed with a distance of 38.10m.

In the women’s 400m T38 final, Luca Ekler of Hungary became the first woman to run under the one-minute mark in the discipline.

She took victory in a world record of 59.74sec, as she earned a third gold and second world record of the Championships.

Also on the track Colombia’s Karen Palomeque took victory in a world record of 26.42, as she won a third gold medal in as many finals at the Championships in the women’s 200m T37.       

Silver went to Paralympic champion Xiaoyan Wen in an Asian record time of 26.53.

Behind China in the overall medal standings came Brazil in second on 14 golds, with a total of 47, with the United States in third on 10 golds and 39 medals.

Across the entire Paris23 World Championships, 35 world records were broken.

The next Para Athletics World Championships is due to take place in Kobe, Japan, from May 17 to 25 2024.

Para athletics competition during the Paris 2024 Paralympics is scheduled to follow later next year, from August 30 to September 8.
