Germany’s "Blade Jumper" Markus Rehm earned his sixth consecutive men’s long jump T64 win in the World Para Athletics Championships as he broke his own Championship record in Paris.

The 34-year-old four-time Paralympic champion has now won every World Championship in his class since Christchurch in New Zealand, in 2011.

His latest flourish, in a Stade Sébastien Charléty where home fans were also celebrating the national holiday, Bastille Day, involved him extending the Championship record he set at Doha in 2015 by nine centimetres as he won with 8.49 metres.

The performance was a highlight on a day when four more world records were broken.

The first arrived in the morning session as Iran’s Paralympic champion Saeid Afrooz set a new mark of 40.37m in the men’s javelin F34 final, bettering the 2018 world record set by Colombia’s Mauricio Valencia by almost two metres.

Later in the day Morocco’s Paralympic champion Ayoub Sadni smashed the world record in the men’s 400m T47 with a time of 46.78sec, bettering the mark he set a year ago on the same track.

Hungary’s Luca Ekler, who had retained her long jump title earlier in the week, won her first world track gold medal and broke the world record set by Britain’s Sophie Hahn in Dubai 2019 as she won the women’s 200m T38 in 25.78sec.

Hahn had shot out of the blocks along with Colombia’s 100m world champion Darian Jimenez, but Ekler pulled away over the last 50 metres.

Another field event world record was registered by shot putter Noelle Malkamaki of the United States, who marked her Championships debut in the F46 class by improving her personal best by nearly a metre to set a new mark of 13.32m.

Great Britain’s Samantha Kinghorn, a Paralympic bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020, stopped Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner from winning her fourth gold of the Championships as she earned a narrow victory in the women’s 100m T53 race in a Championship record time of 15.93.

Debrunner claimed the silver medal in 16.06 with China’s Paralympic and world champion Fang Gao taking the bronze.

China’s Paralympic, world and Asian Para Games champion in the men’s T38 long jump, Dening Zhu, set the first world mark with a final effort of 6.78m that enabled him to overtake his compatriot Huanghao Zhong.

The first world record had arrived in the morning session as Iran’s Paralympic champion Saeid Afrooz set a new mark of 40.37m in the men’s javelin F34 final, bettering the 2018 world record set by Colombia’s Mauricio Valencia by almost two metres.

The morning session also saw a second world title for Switzerland’s multiple Paralympic champion Marcel Hug as he added a 1500m gold in the men’s wheelchair T54 category to add to the one he won earlier in the week over 5,000m..

It was the six-time Paralympic gold medallist’s 11th world title, but his first at 1500m.

The 37-year-old came out strong on the inside lane closely pursued by Canada’s Brent Lakatos, but he was able to move clear to win in a Championship record time of 2min 51.32sec.

Indian shot putter Sachin Sarjerao Khilari won his first World Championships title and set an Asian record with his throw of 16.21m.
