The host nation triumphed 55-44 in the final at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium - which staged table tennis and Para table tennis at Tokyo 2020 - to seal their place at the Paralympic Games for the sixth consecutive edition.

It marked the final match for Japan's head coach Kevin Orr, who had been commuting from the United States to perform his role and announced prior to the tournament he would step down.

New Zealand won the bronze medal at the WWR Asia-Oceania Championship with a 53-31 win against South Korea.

Hosts Japan were unbeaten through the competition, starting with a 51-40 win against New Zealand, then coming from behind to beat Australia 53-46.

They overcame South Korea 70-18, and edged their second match of the Championship against Australia 57-52.

A 49-40 win against New Zealand and 58-20 victory against South Korea concluded their round robin phase to seal a place in the gold medal match with Australia.

South Korea forfeited their second round of round robin matches, but an agreement was reached with WWR and the Japan Wheelchair Rugby Federation for them to play them exhibition ties with the bronze medal match retaining official status.

WWR said South Korea "came into the tournament in a rebuilding phase, and had an unfortunate disruption just prior to the tournament, which meant that they didn’t have their ideal team look they had wanted".

Australia are set to compete in a final WWR qualifying tournament for Paris 2024 with seven other teams, from which three are expected to earn places at the Paralympics.

Hosts France and the other medallists at the WWR European Championship Britain and Denmark have joined Japan in earning Paris 2024 places, with one also available at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.
