Trinidad and Tobago’s Parliament has passed an anti-doping amendment bill to ensure the country is in line with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code, in time for its scheduled hosting of the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.

The Commonwealth Youth Games is due to take place from August 4 to 11, and in the run-up to the event acting Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi proposed changes to the Anti-Doping in Sports (Amendment) Bill 2023 to keep the country in line with the 2023 WADA Code.

"In 44 days, Trinidad and Tobago will host the Commonwealth Youth Games and the international code said Trinidad and Tobago must be in compliance with international standards," Al-Rawi said, as reported by Trinidad and Tobago Newsday.

Al-Rawi said he was bringing the legislation on behalf of Sports Minister Shamfa Cudjoe, and that the amendments to the Bill covered 11 clauses.

The WADA Code was last reviewed in Trinidad and Tobago in 2021 during the coronavirus pandemic, with the country guided by the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee in the absence of the amendments.

The WADA Code is the main document that ensures consistency in anti-doping policies, rules and regulations within sports organisations and public authorities around the world.

It works in conjunction with eight International Standards - for testing and investigations, laboratories, therapeutic use exemptions, the prohibited list, the protection of privacy and personal information, code compliance by signatories, education and results management.

The 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games is set to see more than 1,000 athletes and Para athletes aged between 14 and 18 participating across seven sports.
