Paraguay's Presidente Hayes has made history with its victory in the Copa Libertadores de Beach Soccer.

The team beat Sampaio Correa 6-5 in the final to become the first non-Brazilian team to be crowned champions.

The match went to extra-time at the Arena Cavancha in the Chilean city of Iquique after Argentina's Acassuso ended the hosts' hopes of a representative on the podium by beating Alto Hospicio 4-3 for bronze.

Early on in the final, Sampaio Correa goalkeeper Jefferson prevented the opposition from opening the scoring with a stunning save.

His side then drew first blood after four minutes courtesy of a coolly taken finish by Sikinha.

He then nodded home to double the lead at the 10-minute mark, but the Brazilians were pegged back seconds later when Nestor Medina scored to close out the first third at 2-1.

Medina then completed his brace shortly after the restart to equalise on 13 minutes before a two-minute double salvo from Milcíades Medina and Carlos Benítez pushed Presidente Hayes into a 4-2 lead after the second third.

Within four minutes of the final period, Sikinha and an unfortunate own goal from Benítez made the scores level once again.

However, Benítez then redeemed himself with the Paraguayans' fifth goal 42 seconds from the final whistle but it was not enough as Sikinha found the net yet again to send the match into extra-time.

It looked like penalties were looming but in the final minute Milcíades Medina struck to send his team into ecstasy.

In the bronze medal-match, doubles from Federico López and Juan Sicilia gave Acassuso of Argentina a narrow 4-3 victory against Chile's Alto Hospicio.

The edition was originally set to take place in 2022 but was postponed to this year, while the 2023 event is scheduled to run from December 3 to 10 in Paraguay.

Vasco da Gama are the tournament's most successful side with three trophies from the 2016, 2017, and 2019 tournaments while their fellow Brazilians Vitória are the only other victors, from 2018.
