Olympic silver medallist Jorge Garbajosa has been elected as the new head of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Europe, succeeding Turgay Demirel, who departs after nine years in the top job.

The Spanish official defeated French challenger Jean-Pierre Siutat after receiving 35 of the 50 votes in the Presidential election held at the FIBA Europe General Assembly in Munich.

He replaces Turkey’s Demiral who has appointed Honorary President after members accepted a proposal by the continental governing body and FIBA.

"Firstly, I would like to thank President Turgay Demirel," said Garbajosa.

"Having been on your team on the Board for the past seven years, you have been an inspiration for me ahead of the next four years.

"I also want to thank all of the 50 Federations.

"It is important for us now to work together because we are better together.

"I will fight and work for the growth of basketball in Europe."

During his playing career, Garbajosa played in Spain, Italy and Russia and had a spell in the National Basketball Association with Canadian team Toronto Raptors.

Garbajosa was part of the Spanish team that claimed the gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Cup before earning an Olympic silver at Beijing 2008.

He has been President of the Spanish Basketball Federation since 2016, a position he was re-elected to in 2020.

"President Hamane Niang and I would like to congratulate Jorge Garbajosa on being elected as the new President of FIBA Europe, as well as all of the members of the European Board," said FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis.

"It is encouraging to have so many nations represented and the continued diversity of the Board as it reflects the importance of coming together and uniting for the benefit of the sport."

A group of seven new members were also elected on the FIBA Europe Board with 16 gaining re-election.

Demirel served two teams as FIBA Europe President after being first elected in 2014 before being re-elected in 2019.

"I now pass the torch to you to create a bright future for European basketball," he said.

"Before I leave the stage after nine years as President, I'd like to extend my warmest gratitude to everyone who I have worked with in good and bad days."

The General Assembly also heard reports from the Commissions in finance, competitions, technical, women, youth and small countries.

The meeting concluded with the Assembly offering their "full solidarity and support to Ukraine" and a standing ovation to Ukrainian official present in Munich.

Russia and Belarus remain banned from FIBA competitions in response to the war in Ukraine.

While opening the door to Russian and Belarusian athletes to return as neutrals, the International Olympic Committee has recommended a continued ban on teams from the two countries.
