The event was scheduled to take place in the Canadian city of London from July 13 to 15 this year but with the postponed Chengdu 2023 FISU World University Games due to run from July 28 to August 8, it has been called off.

The Games in China were initially supposed to take place in 2021 but COVID-19 challenges and a clash with the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games caused the postponement.

The national governing body for university sport in Canada still maintained that it wanted to stage future FISU events despite the cancellation.

"U Sports, Tourism London and Western University look forward to working with FISU to host this event at a future date," read a U Sports statement.

Chengdu 2023 also has rowing on its programme, with the sport due to be contested from August 4 to 6 this year.

The last World University Championships Rowing to take place was in Shanghai in 2018 after Zagreb 2020 was also cancelled, this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rotterdam in The Netherlands is due to hold the next edition of the event from July 4 to 6 2024.

The Championships have been staged 15 times since the inaugural hosting in Milan in 1984.

London 2023 was due to be the first time that Canada had staged the event.

If Rotterdam 2024 goes ahead, it will result in The Netherlands hosting the event for a record third time after Amsterdam 1986 and Groningen 1994.

Currently, the country is level with France as two-time hosts following the respective 2004 and 2014 events in Brive-la-Gaillarde and Gravelines.
