International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach opened the new headquarters of the Aruban Olympic Committee (COA) on a visit to the island.

Bach stopped off in the Dutch territory during his tour of Central America and the Caribbean, which saw him visit seven countries.

He was welcomed in Aruba by the island's IOC vice-president Nicole Hoevertsz, an Olympic synchronised swimmer.

COA President Wanda Broeksema also met with Bach, as well as the island's Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes and Governor J.A Boekhoudt.

They discussed the "important role that sport can play in society to instil values with regard to education, health and sustainable development".

Bach then met the Executive Board of the COA and took part in discussions with the local business community and sponsors.

After officially opening the new headquarters, celebrations took place which included sporting demonstrations by hundreds of young athletes.

A total of 16 different sports took place.
