The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has announced that its inaugural Beach Games is scheduled to be held in Malindi from March 17 to 19.

The two-day event will be organised by NOC-K as it plans to bid for the 2025 Africa Beach Games.

It is hoped that the Kenya National Beach Games will help NOC-K reach its strategic goal and promote Olympism in the country.

Aquathlon, 3X3 basketball, judo, boxing, wrestling, taekwondo, handball, soccer, tennis, 4X4 volleyball, rowing, freestyle football, kata karate, kiteboarding and open-water swimming are the sports set to be played at the National Beach Games.

It will also see traditional sports such as ajua, kerum, dhow racing and fishing.

"Kenya, through NOC-K, has put its foot forward by hosting the Beach Games as a test of its preparedness of the beach sport for the continental Games," a statement from NOC-K read, as reported by The Star.

"NOC-K wants to test it's capacity to bid for hosting rights for the continental Games 2025.

"Beach Games has become a highly globally embraced version of the sport since its inaugural World Beach Games in 2019.

"The Games were  organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) in Qatar.

"The Kenya National Beach Games offer a fantastic opportunity to connect with a diverse and enthusiastic audience and cultivate the next generation of athletes and sports fans under exciting, innovative, and dynamic sports."

Handball will be a qualification event for the Africa Beach Games this year, with The Saturday Standard reporting that the event will attract close to 600 athletes.

The second African Beach Games is scheduled to be held this year from June 24 to 30 in Hammamet, Tunisia.

The first edition was held in Sal, Cape Verde in 2019.

This year will also see the World Beach Games, organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees, set to take place from August 5 to 12, with 14 disciplines on the sport programme.
