Sweden’s Hanna Öberg claimed International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Championships gold in the women’s 15 kilometres event in Oberhof after a remarkable comeback following penalties at the shooting station on the opening loop.

Five years to the day since she won Olympic gold at Pyeongchang 2018, Öberg won in Oberhof in a time of 43min 36.1sec to spearhead a Swedish one-two, in front of compatriot Linn Persson who finished 10.3 seconds back in 43:46.4 to claim silver.

Bronze went to Italy’s Lisa Vittozzi who came in 28 seconds behind the winner in 44:04.01 in another remarkable performance after illness at the weekend.

"Before the competition today, I felt like it would be a really hard day," Öberg admitted.

Öberg had slipped to 33rd position after her misses at the first station of the shooting but had worked her way up to second on the final loop.

"I kept my focus after the first miss in the first prone, but I still felt pretty confident, I did a really good job on the range after that," she added.

Öberg’s victory came on the exact anniversary of her Olympic gold medal in Pyeongchang.

"It is special to be able to do this on the day five years since the first gold in Pyeongchang," she said.

Vittozzi had led coming into the final shooting station but she missed for the first time in the competition to allow Persson to take the advantage.

Meanwhile Öberg produced a blistering last loop after leaving the shooting station to reduce a 14 second deficit to overhaul her compatriot for gold.

"I felt I had a little bit left in the legs for the last loop, I also heard that I was taking seconds on Linn and then I was thinking, ‘I really want this gold!’" she said.

"I was so close in the sprint and I really wanted it."
