Brazil captured the South American Under-20 Championship title for the 12th time to seal their place in the men’s football tournament at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

Late goals from Andrey Santos and Pedro saw Brazil overcome Uruguay in a thrilling final group match between the two top teams in Colombia.

Brazil’s goalless draw against the hosts allowed Uruguay to move to top of the standings in the final group stage.

Uruguay had won all four of their group matches as they set their sights on a ninth title only to fall short against Brazil.

The victory for Brazil ended their 12-year wait for a 12th crown having last emerged victorious in 2011.

Victor Roque and Santos topped the scoring charts with six goals each.

Despite the defeat, second-placed Uruguay have secured their place at this year’s Pan American Games in the Chilean capital.

Colombia have also earned a spot at Santiago 2023 after finishing in the top three.

Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia will join hosts Chile, the United States, Dominican Republic, Honduras and Mexico in Santiago.

The men’s football tournament is due to take place from October 22 to November 4, with matches set to be held at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar.

Uruguay, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador have also qualified for this year’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup, scheduled to be held from May 20 to June 11 in Indonesia.
