She is also just the second black Angeleno elected to lead the city in its 241-year history.

Despite the looming Olympic Games, Bass has more pressing matters and aims to tackle Los Angeles' housing crisis as a priority as more than 40,000 people are homeless in the city.

"Today, too many Angelenos have no choice but to crowd multiple families into one home, and to work multiple jobs just to barely pay rent," Bass said, as reported by CNN.

"Tragically, our city has earned the shameful crown as being home to the most crowded neighbourhoods in the nation - Pico Union, South L.A., East L.A., the East Valley.

"And Angelenos, we know our mission - we must build housing in every neighbourhood."

Los Angeles' rate of homeless people has been one of the causes for protest against the Games going to California but Organising Committee chair Casey Wasserman insisted that it is politicians who should be taking responsibility for it, not his team.

Bass said her first act as Mayor will be to declare a state of emergency on homelessness.

Her plan calls for housing to be sourced for 15,000 people by the end of one year and ending tent encampments using existing funding.

She has said the city would put more resources into trained "neighbourhood service teams" to connect people with housing and mental health services.

Protest group NOlympicsLA has claimed that there was a direct correlation between the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and the militarisation of American police, and it fears that the same could occur in 2028.

The group also protested the construction of the SoFi Stadium, which is set to stage the event's Opening and Closing Ceremonies, to raise awareness of the displacement of communities in the Inglewood area.

Bass overcame real estate tycoon Rick Caruso, who spent more than $104 million (£84 million/€98 million) on his campaign, to succeed term-limited Mayor Eric Garcetti.
